Bookkeeping classes a good idea for an accounting major?
I have gone back to school to get my degree in Accounting and then go on to sit for the CPA. I will have my bachlors degree in December and will continue taking the classes I need.
I am thinking about getting a job now, I have a degree in Bus Admin and 10 years experience in administation. I have been at home with my kids for six years now. I applyed for a bookkeeping job with my local school district and failed the ledger test!!! I have never done bank reconciliations before and I have never used Peachtree.
I am thinking about enrolling in either an online or local technycal school bookkeeping course to learn all this stuff, but I have some froends saying that I would be going backwards and that I should just wait to start working when I have my Accounting degree.
I really need input my career goals are to work for the IRS. So even though I know alot I really feel like I know very little. Thank you in advance for your help!!
Well, if you’re going back to get your degree in Accounting, I wouldn’t pay for an extra bookkeeping course. It might be mildly helpful, but you’ll get your fill of bookkeeping in your principal accounting courses, and then more in upper-division Accounting courses.
I recently declared an Accounting minor and am in the middle of a Principles of Accounting II summer session, and we pretty much just finished up basic bookkeeping. I know that I don’t know everything since it’s just a principles course, but my friends that are accounting majors are having to take more in-depth classes about those kinds of things – if you’re majoring in it, you’ll get all you need in those classes.
I would agree with your friends – you’ll understand a lot more once you’ve taken a few accounting classes, and it all just starts falling into place after a little bit.
